City officials in Augusta, Georgia are contemplating severe measures against local businesses affected by an increased criminal activity. This may result in the loss of their alcohol permits due to escalating violence. The proposal has caused concerns among the business community. The local chamber of commerce is urging owners to attend public hearings to express their concerns.

The Smart Grocery outlet on Wrightsboro Road is at the center of this controversy due to its association with crime, which includes shootings, robberies, and drug-related activities. Despite active collaboration with local law enforcement, the area remains a violence hotspot. Sae Pak, the landowner, argues that the issue lies with the high-crime neighborhood, not the store. However, the Augusta Commission holds the storeowner accountable, inciting further difficulties in addressing the issue effectively.

The rapid increase in violence has led to the departure of businesses from the region, including the Little Caesars pizza franchise. Pak has invited the commission to tour the property to better understand the situation and propose effective solutions.

Discussions about Smart Grocery have not yet led to decisive actions, but a potential six-month probationary period for the store is being considered. Rigorous scrutiny and potential punitive measures for other local businesses are also being discussed. This includes Glendale’s Olive Road convenience store and Club Rain, indicating a potentially larger regulatory scrutiny.

Despite these challenges, Smart Grocery plans to implement robust crime-prevention strategies, which include establishment of an auxiliary sheriff’s office substation and integration of advanced surveillance technology inside and outside the store. Partnerships with local community organizations for regular neighborhood watch meetings and community empowerment programs centered around safety awareness are also being considered.

As part of the initiative, Smart Grocery is open to suggestions from its employees and customers on improving store safety. The company believes that such efforts will improve the store’s security, providing a safer shopping environment for its customers.
